Here you can relax with a good book whilst sipping on a cocktail or two, or paddle in the clear waters and take in the picturesque scenery around you.

If you want a change of scenery, you could also take the short trip over to Sami to experience Antisamos Beach’s famous good looks. While you’re there, try a tour of the breathtaking Drogarati Cave. This ancient natural formation is about 150 million years old and is one of Kefalonia’s most impressive attractions.

Here, you can witness the incredible rock formations, and a spectacular hall called the ‘Sala of Apotheosis’ where the natural acoustics are truly mesmerising. After your day trip, you’ll be ready for a bite to eat; the waterfront is the place to go to tuck into the catch of the day.

For a memorable day out, venture to the north-west of Kefalonia where you can explore the spectacular ruins of the Castle of Assos. This impressive structure was built in the 16th century. Visitors are free to explore the Church of Agios Markos and the Venetian High Commissioner’s house which lie inside.

And for those who like to keep active on holiday, spend a day in Assos village and walk the Venetian castle trail. Rise early in the morning and climb to the peak where you can witness beautiful views of the Assos port and beaches. Or take a walk between Poros and Old Skala’s hills over to Paleocastro where you can uncover breathtaking natural scenery and relish in the tranquil atmosphere.

Excellent beaches

Skala is a traditional seaside location with a mixture of sand and shingle beach. It offers a spot of relaxation with views of glimmering, crystal‐clear waters that stretch over the horizon. Inland views are also pleasing as the cove is surrounded by thick green agriculture.

If you want a break from lounging and need a splash of excitement, there is a good selection of water sports to try, from jet skis to parasailing. Renowned for its cleanliness and organisation, Skala’s fabulous beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and is a place many people flock to in the summer.

Kaminia Beach is one of the longest beaches in Kefalonia and offers a peaceful place to kick back and unwind. Located close to Skala village, it’s home to a vast expanse of soft, white sand and glistening shallow waters that are perfect for children to paddle in. This beach is also a breeding ground for the endangered Caretta sea turtle. If you’re lucky, you might be able to witness these sea creatures hatching from their eggs here.

And suppose you fancy venturing away from Kefalonia for a little while. In that case, you can always hop on one of the many boat excursions which frequently operate. Explore neighbouring islands like Zante for even more fun‐filled adventures.

Wonderful attractions

From outstanding beaches to exhilarating water sports and activities, Skala boasts a range of attractions to keep you relaxed and entertained during your holiday. When you’ve finished basking in the glorious sunshine on the soft sands, take a trip into Skala Old Town where you can explore the many historical buildings and churches.

Stop for lunch at one of the garden restaurants before strolling down to Fountain Square, a popular location among locals and visitors.

For those seeking exciting thrills and spills, take to the water in a speed boat or try your hand at wakeboarding, parasailing and much more. You can even hire out your own boat if you’re feeling particularly adventurous.

History and culture

Skala was once a small, working fishing village that has expanded to accommodate tourism growth in the area. Today you can walk along the sand-shingle beach into the centre for fresh seafood and beautiful buildings. The resort is located around historical and natural marvels which make staying here all the more magical. Walk around Skala Old Town to gain an insight into the fascinating fishing ethos that still shapes the locals’ way of life.

And to learn more about the history of the town, head down to the edge of Skala village where you can explore the remains of a 3rd‐century Roman Villa. Witness the remarkable mosaics and gain an insight into Roman life as you stroll through the walkways and excavated rooms.

Nightlife

There’s a choice of restaurants and tavernas here, making it a perfect destination for those laid-back holidays. Captain’s Bar is a popular haunt for visitors and locals alike, thanks to its lively atmosphere and delicious cocktails.

Or sit outside and shade under the straw roof of Akri’s Seaside Bar, where you can order a variety of fruity drinks and look over at the tranquil sea setting. Although a lot of bars stay open until the early hours and play music to get you dancing, there are only a few options when it comes to nightclubs.

Holidays to Skala are ideal for those who like to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
