Hike up the Madeira mountains

Walk through the shaded forests, past flowing streams and waterfalls in the emerald green countryside. Climb the rocky terrain to Pico do Arieiro. The area has a huge altitude of 1,818 metres and is the third highest peak on the island. The challenging trek is best done with clear skies as the trail takes you high above the clouds.

Once at the top, you can take in the breathtakingly beautiful views of the contrasting green landscape with the blue sea. If the idea of trekking up there doesn't appeal to you, you can also journey up by car.

If you're up to the challenge, take your walking boots and hike the 2-3 hour journey to the highest peak of Pico Ruivo. From here, on a sunny day, you can see for miles. Be in awe at the views of the thick, green forest, ancient old trees and endless blue water.
