Dublin Zoo

For a fun-filled day out for the whole family to enjoy, pay a visit to Dublin Zoo. Found in Phoenix Park, you can get to the zoo by train, bus, car or bike, making it an easy day trip from Dublin city centre. When you arrive at Dublin Zoo, which is one of the oldest zoological parks in the world, check the what’s on list and choose a few talks and activities to see through the day.

From the sea lion splash to elephant encounters, the knowledgeable keepers will tell you all about the animals, from their behaviour and diet to conservation projects and upkeep of the enclosures. Wandering around the 28 hectare zoo, you’ll see more than 100 species of animals in carefully built habitats.

Visit the Orangutan Forest, tour the African Savanna, go to the Gorilla Rainforest and face your fears at the House of Reptiles. See the turtles, bats, chimpanzees, penguins and giraffes as you walk through the grounds, stopping at refreshment stands when you get thirsty.

At the lion enclosure, you’ll find out about the zoo’s breeding program, including the famous MGM roaring lion who was born right here in Dublin. If you have youngsters, go to the Family Farm where children can meet the sheep, rabbits, pigs and ducks and try their hand at milking a cow on a life-sized model.

When little legs get tired, take the train around the zoo or refuel with a meal at the Meerkat Restaurant. After your visit to Dublin Zoo, spend some time exploring Phoenix Park, looking out for wild deer as you walk through the huge green grounds.
