Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

One of the most popular things to see on Paris city breaks, Notre-Dame is currently closed for repair after the fire in 2019 (check the Paris tourist information Notre-Dame page for updates).

You can still visit to take a look around the outside, with its cheeky gargoyles and jaw-dropping architecture. And don't miss the medieval and Roman ruins in the archaeological crypt!

Built in the mid-14th century, Notre-Dame is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the world – famous for its huge stained glass rose windows glowing in the sun. And thanks to Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it’s also one of the most recognised churches. Over the centuries, countless people have climbed the spiral steps in the bell towers to soak up the Quasimodo-eye views across the city streets.

Getting to Notre-Dame Paris

The closest metro stop is Cité on the Metro 4 line. It’s also a relatively quick and pleasant stroll from other landmarks like The Louvre and Pompidou Centre. The walk to the Eiffel Tower is a little further, but scenic, taking you along the banks of the Seine.
