Santa Maura castle

Santa Maura castle, also known as the Castle of Agia Mavra, is a great cultural alternative to relaxing on the beach. Hop onto a bus, which run regularly from Nikiana, and travel to the island's capital, Lefkas Town.

Explore the brooding fortress and wander beside its ancient walls to the well-preserved 15th century churches, barracks and the hospital. The stronghold, which is surrounded by two lagoons, once served as a refugee camp in World War II and, although the thick fortress walls were resilient enough to survive several earthquakes, they suffered badly in Italian bombing raids. The damage can still be seen today.

Be sure to visit the archaeological museum to learn more about the castle's deep history.

After a busy afternoon sightseeing, why not travel to the town's centre for a pleasant stroll around and a bite to eat? The newly built marina has become a hotspot for visitors as the area is lined with shops and restaurants. Choosing a place to eat is easy as there are a variety of delicious meals with views of the harbour or in the main square where the buzzing, friendly Greek atmosphere is the perfect place to socialise with friends over a cocktail or two.
