7 Things to do in Albufeira

It's easy to see why Albufeira is dubbed the St. Tropez of the Algarve. This former fishing village, with its sun-drenched coastline and ultra-modern marina, is now one of the largest resorts in the region. As well as visiting the beautiful beaches of Praia da Coelha and Praia Gale, there's plenty of things to do in Albufeira. Go beyond the coastline and you’ll discover everything from  fun-filled family activities, souvenir shopping and plenty of local culture.

Pretty cobblestone streets

Experience traditional Portugal with a stroll around the pretty cobblestone streets of Albufeira Old Town, where you can relax in one of its many cafés and restaurants, or go boutique shopping for knick-knacks. Delve into  the area's history with a wander around the ancient Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila, before checking out distinctive landmarks like the Torre Do Relógio clock tower, Igreja Matriz parish church and gothic Capela De Misericórdia mosque. The Municipal Museum of Archaeology has lots of pieces excavated from nearby too, including a Neolithic vase from 5000 BC and a Roman mosaic from Retorta.

Beachfront watersports

Looking for more of an active afternoon to keep the family busy? Watersports are one of the best things to do on Albufeira holidays. Spend the day clinging onto a banana boat, touring the remote caves by paddleboard, or water-skiing for that adrenaline-fuelled rush. After you've enjoyed the beachfront action, head to Albufeira's golf courses to test out your putting skills. If you’re not fazed by heights, you can always whizz down the zip wires at Luso Aventura Albufeira. Sail along the coast with a boat trip and see this stunning region from the water. And if you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins in their natural habitat.
